Pick a few preferences below and we'll narrow the city down to the stops that fit — then map the route for you.
San Antonio has been a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2017 — one of only two in the United States — and nowhere in that food culture is the argument louder than over the margarita. Mi Tierra has been pouring since 1941. La Margarita has carried the drink in its name since 1981. Blanca Aldaco put the avocado margarita on the map from here. This is the city's case, one glass at a time.
What earns a spot: fresh juice, squeezed that day. Where a bar's default pour is a pre-made mix, it stays on this list only if there's a real margarita to order instead — and the card tells you what to ask for. Premix is available on every corner in America. That isn't what this is for.
One exception: a drink that is itself part of San Antonio's margarita story earns its place whether or not it satisfies a purist. Those are marked, so you know what you're ordering and why it's here.
Several in one row means "any of these". Nothing selected shows you everything.
Every margarita here is worth ordering, so 2½ stars is the floor, not a failing grade. Stars climb from there with local write-ups, our own picks, and reviews — sources are linked on every card.

The house margarita, on the rocks or frozen, and the reason people keep coming back. Order it straight or push it into any of a dozen-plus flavors — mango, strawberry, watermelon, chamoy, melon. Top-shelf and premium pours step up to Don Julio, Herradura, or Patron Silver.

Visit websiteBar director Lauren Beckman solved the salted-rim problem by turning the salt into a foam: a salted orange foam sits over a conspicuously clear drink built on clarified lime cordial, so every glass carries exactly the same amount of salt as the one next to it. The bar has its own entrance and takes walk-ins — you do not need the tasting menu to drink here. Second in the Express-News Top 10.

The staff shirts read "La Casa de la Chispa" and they have earned it — the Chispa is drier and less sweet than most, which is the whole point. The premium pour with Don Julio runs $16, two dollars more than the house frozen with prickly pear. Fourth in the Express-News Top 10.

A San Antonio original. The puffy taco is San Antonio’s own, and it is a Lopez family argument: Ray opened Ray’s Drive Inn in 1956, his brother Arturo trademarked the puffy taco there in 1992, and Henry ran this one. You come for that lineage; the margarita is what you drink while it happens.
